You do know this came out in 1971 right? Every movie has a layer of "plot armor" around their main characters. I'd also point out the detective training, gun training and available tech in 1971 arent what they are today. Next will be a vid about the Dukes of Hazard and how bad of a driver they are because of all the traffic laws they break... Made it to 10:32

Speaking as a veteran (Army, 92-2000) I can say for certain that it is not easy to acclimate to civilians. I still haven't managed it, really. As for the training bit, it was almost like they were doing a sort of futuristic Sparta.

Having recently rewatched Soldier after man years, I was surprised at how well it held up. The movie is certainly clumsy in parts, but it is also very nuanced and does a great job of making us feel for its characters. I like how the temptation was resisted to overly humanize Todd and turn him from an unstoppable killing machine into a feeling human. The movie instead keeps him very emotionally distant, showing how deeply ingrained his training is, but also gives us glimpses of his struggle to fit in with peaceful people. Paul WS Anderson really should stick to doing original movies, because his three original movies are his best ones.

I just found this review, I can not express how you have nailed the issues we go through, not just combat soldiers, but all of us that put in years of our lives, as early as 16 or 17 till some over 60 years old. The institutionalized lifestyle of the military is needed and hard to overcome during those formative years of young men and women. Well done!

As an infantry veteran ive always felt this movie was made for us. Kurt Russel nailed the performance, as did the others honestly. It always spoke to me on multiple levels. I looked at it less of a means for civilians to accept soldiers and more of a means to help us understand why civilians cant really ever understand us and that just like in battle, we have to adapt and overcome. The joke is really on the civilian because life is the real war. We can either soldier through it,or be refugees. I will always choose soldier, even though my model is now long obsolete.

9:01 - 9:19 That makes me think of soldiers with PTSD or guilt or whatever who are so burned out that they are tired... and don't feel like it's worth the risk trusting others... everytime you trust someone else the memory comes back of fearing you'll be hurt again which makes it seemingly not worth it so they turn to self-medication, whatever that is. Course, in this scenario we don't know what level the genetic engineering and training has altered him.

Such an underrated movie. As a veteran I struggled with assimilation back into the real world, I still think back to a time in my life when all I had to do was not die. I always remember a quote “ the sheep will always fear the sheepdog because he has teeth like the wolf” this movie depicts that very well. Todd was always doing things the way military programmed him to do with very little understanding of how it would be perceived by anybody around him. Veterans everywhere eventually come to accept that they will never really be accepted by non veterans and will always find a connection with other veterans because only they understand. Once they stop trying to fit in and accept what they are, do veterans really find peace. It took myself a number of years and a marriage to accept the bastard of society I was.

First off, great character essay. You nailed Avasarala. However i think you completely missed on Arjun. Crisjen would not be as strong a character without Arjun, he represents the normal, the safe haven from the politics and intrigue that Crisjen finds herself deeply immersed in. Yes, she gets frustrated with his naiveté at times, but that is also the very reason she loves him, he is her port in the storm. His support always comes with no ulterior motive, and even when misguided, he is always straightforward in his attempts to help. For a woman with as complicated a life as Avasarala, having someone with whom she can let her guard down is precious to her, and we see that many times throuhout the show.

The problem with the film fundamentally is that it kind of makes no sense. They wouldn't just liquidate valuable soldiers for no reason, they'd still be valuable as trainers or in other positions. If you spent all this time training soldiers and giving them war experience, you'd fundamentally expect them to keep being useful especially if they still WANTED to serve, and they would be forced to fight until they die. Why give up a valuable asset? You could at the very least just keep using them until they die. It might even make more sense they'd be relegated to lower level jobs they don't want to work as they were used to being at war and as some kind of national guard post or something they start kind of going nuts as they're there to defend civilians and don't know how to handle themselves. Like, oh yeah we don't want you for frontline service so here's a civilian guard post, and they start going crazy and attacking civilians or something. The other problem is that none of the soldiers really show any obvious signs of aging or being weak, and even demonstrate they can defeat the other super soldiers so, it would stand to reason this demonstration would make the leaders feel as if they're still valuable. They just want to remove the older soldiers for no real logical reason. It's a bit of a laughably absurd scenario. And if they planned on just getting rid of them, they likely would just kill them by slipping them poison or something, rather than sending them out to be turned back on them or something, which is what inevitably happens. "You're a trained killing machine who wants to serve us and could be a threat to us in the future ,so we're going to just throw you in to a random village. Kthnxbai." Also with super advanced technology, you likely could heal soldiers from wounds fairly easily like, say losing an eye and could take the older soldiers and just, say upgrade them, potentially even by changing their genetics via gene therapy. We already have ways to do this right now with gene therapy such as CRISPR, albeit it's very limited. To have the ability to go to other planets, but nothing like super soldier armor, ability to heal back missing organs or body parts, or to change their genetics after they're born seems laughably absurd. The premise of the movie requires us to believe they're capable of so many fantastical things but not something that would be relatively simple by comparison. If you can make clones, you could make a clone of someone and then implant said organs in to a new body, just for example so this should be an easy fix. Even organs that might age. And you could have robot hearts or lungs or other such things as well. The idea they're just evil and ruthless for no reason but managed to create successful soldiers so far is kind of goofy. I feel like it just tries to show the military as eval without any real underlying reason as to why or justification or the like.

Russel pulls out all the acting chops n stops. he isnt noted for "range".. and yet, he pulls the 1000yd stare out, at all the right times. he pulls you IN, within inches of him.. only to make you feel like you need to be a mile away.. literally.. a mile away. its a superb film, hits on about every note, the weasel Col who thinks Soldiers are but expendable hardware, albeit expensively bred hardware, to be used, upgraded, disposed of as he see's fit, and is no where close to an actual Combat ready solider himself... the irony in that is huge, and hugely important.. seeing him piss himself.......was just such an epically heartwarming moment.. i dont want to give away too much, in case you havent seen this.. its worth a half dozen rewatches, JUST to get all the inflections Russel puts into his facial expressions, while speaking, i think, fewer lines by a lead actor than any other movie NOT about a Mute or speaking-impaired person.

The one thing I didn't like was when Col. Mekem confronted Todd at the end he should have tried to bark orders at him to invoke his conditioning. I think this for two reasons. First Mekem would probably actually expect him to come to heel and second the knowledge that it was death to show fear and weakness. They could still have had him piss himself when those orders failed. If I missed something about the end my excuse is I am going on one watch in the theater when it was released.
